Mission Statement for the Rights of Nature
Greenfield Rights of Nature is an organization of local residents dedicated to
making Greenfield a clean, environmentally healthy community.
It is the stated ambition of this group to someday bring about legislation that will provide for the protection of the Rights of Nature. Given that all of life is dependent on having clean air, pure water and healthy soil in order to live and prosper, we are determined to ensure that, by bringing about a Rights of Nature ordinance in our community, Greenfield’s air, water and soil will be protected from avoidable sources of pollutants unless the majority of our local citizens shall choose to allow such degradation by majority vote.
Our first effort is to ban single-use plastics within our community. It is our contention that single-use, point-of-sale plastics, such as single-use shopping bags, plastic foam take-out containers and cups, styrene straws and utensils, single-use plastic water bottles and, even, cigarette filters, all create trash that will not breakdown in Nature and will, therefore, be around forever. Besides despoiling our streets and byways, these forever-plastics clog our waterways, pollute our waters and kill off creatures whose life cycles are spent mostly, or exclusively, in water and upon which many of us depend for food.
For this reason, Greenfield Rights of Nature is presently working on an ordinance that will ban all single-use, point-of-sale plastics in Greenfield.
Borrowing from, and combining the language of, the many communities around the world and within Massachusetts itself that have acted on this urgent need before us, we are promoting an ordinance that would ban the use of all such plastics from within our city limits.
This, then, is our mission: to free the environment of Greenfield from the degradation and pollution of single-use plastics within its borders as a first step to achieving a community in which the Rights of Nature, and therefore, of all creatures and human beings, shall be sacrosanct for now and in perpetuity.
